Abstract

The paper studies international labour migration on the basis of a case study from northeast Thailand, utilising the livelihoods approach as a framework of analysis. It is argued that as a holistic concept which focuses on the daily life of people, while embedding it in a broader context, the livelihoods approach can enhance understanding of migration. The paper describes the migration movement from the study area and shows the need to consider the interlinkage of various factors in order to explain the phenomenon. The paper concludes by discussing the value of the livelihoods approach for the study of migration and explores further steps in livelihoods analysis.
