Abstract
This case-study of the Bombay Lunatic Asylum illustrates the early development of a psychiatric institution within the context of British colonialism.´It is argued that the racial, social and cultural preconceptions characteristic of colonial society determined the institutional regime and its developments at least as strongly as medical considerations.Statistics
