Abstract

This article gives a short introduction to the private Daoist temples in Hong Kong. These temples are members of the Hong Kong Daoist Association, and most of them are charitable organizations. They were particularly active during the 1950’s and 1960’s in relief work, medical services and education. Most of these Daoist groups practise fuji. They belong to various schools of Daoism, and all of them have their origins in China. As a result of the recent political changes in China members of these groups have emigrated from Hong Kong to North America and Australia, while some of them have formed good contacts with mainland China.
