Abstract

The consideration of regional aspects, i.e. the specific social, cultural, economic and historical development of the various regions are of special relevance for an understanding of society in general, especially in multicultural and relatively young nation-states like Indonesia. Against this background the long-term development in North Sulawesi is analyzed with regard to regional interest groups and regional resources on the one hand and specific ethnic or genealogical characteristics in the consitution of such groups on the other. Starting point of the analysis is pre-colonial Minahasa which was structured and determined by social units called walak. Furthermore, attention is paid to various steps of development in colonial as well as post-colonial times. The argumentation ends with an analysis of the contemporary development projects (proyek). It is shown that regional resources as well as interest groups changed over time while regional socio-cultural strategies of participation have shown relative continuity.
