Abstract

While entrepöt trade dominated the Hong Kong economy until the early 1960's, Hong Kong is now a very important industrial and financial centre. The rapid economic growth has strongly intensified the economic relations between Hong Kong and the West European countries. With the inception of the four modernizations programme in China, in which the EEC will play a part, Hong Kong will greatly benefit from its role as an entrepöt not only for goods transactions but also for capital flows in the years to come. The present paper gives some statistical projections on the development of the economic relations between Hong Kong and the EEC in the 1980's and points to the problems related herewith.
