Abstract
The economic solution of poverty is merely one component of a multi-dimensional transformation of the Indian society, and as such it is a task of gigantic scope. The economic reasons of poverty are to be found in the insufficient participation of parts of the rural population in the means of production, especially land and capital. Furthermore, poverty especially among agricultural labourers is closely linked with the problem of rural unemployment and underemployment, although these labourers are suffering less from a lack of supply of work than from low wages and professional immobility due to institutional restrictions.
