Abstract

In his autobiography Mahatma Gandhi declares that the reading of John Ruskin's Unto this last in 1904 changed his life completely. Gandhi stresses the great relevance Ruskin had for his development. By comparing Ruskin's book with Gandhi's interpretation Sarvodaya published in 1908, also by comparing it to Gandhi's life and work thereafter, this article shows how great Ruskin's influence on Gandhi really was, and how the Mahatma used Ruskin's ideas and
writings.
