Die indische Diaspora in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika

Abstract

During the last decade, Indian Americans have become increasingly visible as an important ethnic group in the United States of America. This article examines the history of Asian Indians in the U.S. It describes the circumstances of the life of a rather small Indian diaspora in the United States during the 19th and early 20th century as well as the development of the post-1965 Indian American community. Here, the focus shifts to the notable inner cleavages within the group. Special attention is also given to its socio-economic profile and the consequences and implications thereof. Additionally, the political engagement of today's Asian Indians in the United States is assessed. In a concluding section, possible future developments within the Indian diaspora in the U.S., both economically and politically, are described.
