Abstract

Thailand experienced a rapid extension of social welfare at the end of the 20th century. In a period of just ten years the country moved to a free-market social economy similar to its prototypes in Europe. This paper looks at the development of formal, informal and traditional welfare aspects in Thailand. It shows how traditional bonds of family and community contribute to the social wellbeing of the Thai population. In addition, the role of non-governmental welfare organisations is examined. The main focus of the article is on public social services and/or financial support for certain people and groups. The author argues that with the steady expansion of its social security and public welfare system, Thailand has gradually developed into a paternalistic welfare state.
