Call for Papers: From Campus to Confrontation: Youth Movements against Authoritarianism in Asia (Workshop & Special Issue)

IQAS invites submissions for a special issue on "Youth Movements against Authoritarianism in Asia". This issue, edited by Anas Ansar and Teresa Jopson (Arnold Bergstraesser Institute, Freiburg), is scheduled for publication in 2026. The deadline for manuscript proposals (300–500 words) is 15 February 2025.

IQAS has now successfully registered at Scopus. Scopus is an abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed scientific literature. It includes journals, books and conference proceedings worldwide in the disciplines of science, technology, medicine, social sciences, arts and humanities.

IQAS welcomes three new editors

IQAS warmly welcomes Fatima C. Alvarez Castillo, Ahsan Kamal and Victoria Kumala Sakti as new members of the Editorial Team!

Fatima C. Alvarez Castillo is a professorial lecturer at the University of the Philippines Manila campus. Apart from teaching at the university, she provides mentorship to groups and organisations working for the rights of the marginalised. She tries to ground her scholarship in the actual struggle of the oppressed, especially indigenous peoples and women living in poverty. The belief that the world will eventually be a fairer and kinder place sustains her work. She has published on questions of justice in various fields including health care, research ethics, women, indigenous peoples and pedagogy.

Ahsan Kamal is an assistant professor in Pakistan Studies at the Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad and has been a lecturer in Pakistan Studies since 2010. In his research he focuses on the sociology of water, decolonizing theory, research methods, political ecology and social movements. He is furthermore specialized in designing and conducting large scale surveys and qualitative studies, researching in post-disaster and conflict areas and conducting workshops and training for activists, community organizers and journalist. He acquired his PhD in Sociology at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill, NC and won the 2020 Pirzada Dissertation Award by University of California, Berkeley. He studied Sociology, International Affairs & South Asian Studies and Computer Sciences at the UNC, the Columbia University in New York and the National University of Science and Technology in Pakistan.

Victoria Kumala Sakti is a postdoctoral fellow at the Max Planck Research Group “Ageing in a Time of Mobility” of the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity. Her research focuses on ageing and displacement, and their intersections with issues of care, memory, and post-conflict recovery. Victoria has conducted extensive ethnographic research in Timor-Leste, Indonesia, and their borderlands. Her work also examines the impacts of borders, (im)mobility, political identity, translocal practices, and belonging. She obtained her PhD at the Freie Universität Berlin in Social and Cultural Anthropology and studied Theory and Practice of Human Rights at the University of Essex in the United Kingdom, along with Psychology at the Atma Jaya Catholic University in Indonesia.

Presentation of Open Access Award

During the Open Access Week the award for Open Access Publishing of the Humboldt-Universität Berlin was given to IQAS - International Quarterly for Asian Studies in the category "group/project" on 25 October 2022 in Berlin. The prize is rewarded with 4.000 euros and was received by Prof. Dr. Claudia Derichs, PD Dr. Andrea Fleschenberg dos Ramos Pinéu, and Dr. Amanda tho Seeth on the IQAS editors' behalf.

IQAS wins Open Access Award 2021

IQAS editors win the Open Access Award 2021 of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. The Open Access Award honours outstanding or exceptional achievements by members of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in the area of open access, the free access to research results. The award is intended to encourage more open access at the university and to make it more visible. The whole IQAS team is grateful for this honour.

Fishbowl talk on "Decolonising Academia - Practices and Challenges Thereof"

IQAS co-hosts an online fishbowl talk on "Decolonising Academia - Practices and Challenges Thereof" on 15 July 2022, 2-4pm Berlin time. The event is being organised by our cooperation partner Coli²bri, an interdisciplinary and transregionally oriented initiative based at the Humbold-Universität Berlin. Coli²bri envisages a multicentric perspective that integrates positions of Southern theory and praxis into the heart of our academic conversation.

IQAS at EUROSEAS 2019

The European Association for Southeast Asian Studies (EuroSEAS) held its 10th conference from 10 to 13 September 2019 at the Humboldt University in Berlin. IQAS was present with an exhibition booth, sponsored a roundtable discussion and participated in a lively panel discussion on "Academic Publishing".
