About the Journal
The Pali Text Society was founded in London in 1881 by T. W. Rhys Davids (1843–1922) with the support of an international team of scholars. In addition to Rhys Davids as chairman, the original committee included scholars from Britain, Denmark, France, and Germany: Viggo Fausbøll (1821–1908), William Hunter (1840–1900), Richard Morris (1833–1894), Hermann Oldenberg (1854–1920), and Émile Senart (1847–1928).
The first issue of the Journal of the Pali Text Society was published a year later in 1882. Between 1882 and 1927 twenty-three issues were published. In 1981, commemorating the Society’s centenary, these issues were reprinted in eight volumes along with a ninth volume of fifteen new articles. Between 1985 and 2021 a further 25 volumes were published irregularly. With the publication of volume 35 in 2025 the Pali Text Society relaunched the Journal with a view to publishing a volume annually.
In addition to the online Journal published on the HASP website, a hard copy of each issue is published by the Pali Text Society and is available for purchase on its website: https://palitextsociety.org/. Past volumes of JPTS are archived on the HASP site.
