In modernen pluralistischen Gesellschaften gelten Konflikte nicht etwa als Webfehler, sondern geradezu als Lebenselexier einer gesunden Demokratie. Gefragt sind "Streitkultur" und Konfliktfähigkeit, während andererseits "Harmonie" und Konfliktscheu als Relikte einer vormundschaftlichen Tradition abgelehnt werden. Prämissen dieser so typisch neuzeitlichen Einstellung sind Individualismus, Pluralismus und Partizipation.
