Abstract

This paper mainly presents how the author organizes the class "Chinese film", a course for advanced students at Freie Universitat Berlin. The aim of such classes is to give students an opportunity to understand current Chinese society better and to discuss current issues they are interested in in their target language, Chinese. Furthermore, by watching films and following their protagonists through the story, students are confronted with Chinese cultural values and Chinese people's value choices as well as dilemmas the Chinese protagonists find themselves in. This puts the students into an intercultural learning situation which is enhanced by the fact that their teacher is also Chinese, albeit somewhat competent in regard to their culture. Thus, Chinese made films may also be employed to strengthen intercultural understanding and intercultural skills, because while the protagonists cannot debate with their German audience of Sinology students, their Chinese bom teacher can.
