Abstract

Word formation in language comparison – a help for teaching and translating

The comparison of foreign language models of word formation with those of the native language can and will be very usefull for the teaching and learning of words.

The initial hypothesis of my considerations is the assumption of a mental lexicon containing non-analyzable lexical units as well as those based on rules. Non-analyzable lexical units have to be learned as an integral whole, transparent lexical units that are formed according to rules can be reconstructed and acquired on the basis of the knowledge of rules and models of word formation. To assist this process of learning processes of word formation in the foreign language have to be made obvious and rules have to be made applicable. Both of them have to be compared with equivalent models of word formation in the native language. That holds for both the description of words in textbooks.

Examples of selected models and types of word formation are given in the text, proposals for a conversion into practice are mentioned briefly.
