Abstract

A summary of my professional experience in the last four years allows me to conclude that not only is the “happy and relaxed phase” for Chinese interpreters past, but also the days of the bread and butter interpreters, those with a good working knowledge of the language and employed in a vast variety of areas, are numbered. In my opinion, anyone now wishing to become an interpreter for Chinese, must as well as being informed on Chinese affairs, also acquire a specialist knowledge of the Federal Republic of Germany.
