Abstract

In the past 30 years when teaching elementary Chinese the Beijing Languages Institute had always used textbooks of a comprehensive nature. Now these textbooks have been replaced by new ones with sub-divisions and serialized. These new books are experiments both in new principle of compilation and programming.

  1. The compilers realize that so far as the regular language teaching with a definite purpose is concerned, the textbook is but one of the key links and should not unduly interfere with the other aspects of language teaching.
  2. In addition to written texts different types of teaching materials have been incorporated, such as illustrations, photos to be used in the classroom, tapes, video tapes, TV films etc.
  3. Up-to-date language teaching methods and theories have been taken into consideration and selectively applied.
  4. The contents of the texts are richer and livelier by including a wider selection of topics that would interest the learner. There is an increase in vocabulary and texts and much livelier and more efficient recurrence of previous words and grammar points in different series of teaching materials.

The new textbooks have proved successful in enhancing the learner´s comprehension and reading proficiency but as is true of all experiments, there is room for improvement through further application.
