Abstract

Kazimierz Pochwalski was born into a family with a tradition of three generations of painters, a rarity in Poland. He studied painting, first under the guidance of his father, then at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts under Władysław Łuszczkiewicz and Felix Szynalewski, and later, from 1876 to 1878, under Jan Matejko. He continued his studies at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts with Otto Seitz and Alexander Wagner. Before the Christmas of 1882, Pochwalski went to Paris, where he studied portrait painting in art galleries and museums. In Paris, his tutor was Leon Bonnat.
