Abstract

Time and again, the thesis is put forward that learning a "particularly difficult" foreign language helps in the education of particularly gifted children and youngsters. However, only very limited material is available on the topic of learning Chinese and gifted children. I would like to illuminate a few aspects, resulting from experience I have gained in this context. This article looks at the definition of giftedness, the question as to what Chinese lessons can offer gifted children, and whether Chinese is only suitable for gifted children. The question as to whether Chinese lessons can bring "real" China closer will be examined towards the end of this article. Learning Chinese not only serves in educating gifted children, but also educates and challenges all children
