Abstract

This paper presents the initial results of investigations into the influence of English on the standard Chinese vernacular in three different Taiwanese television shows, broadcast in summer 1996 and summer 2002. An attempt is made to classify the examples of English influence found into various categories including lexical, morphological and syntactic and to trace the development of these influences over the period in question. Results of a survey carried out in Taiwan in summer 2002 on public perception of and attitudes towards these linguistic developments are also presented. Comparisons are made between public perception of language use and the results of empirical investigations. It is established that there is some indication that lexical choice has an influence on syntactic structure.
