Abstract
This article presents arguments advocating the treatment of phonetic elements of Chinese characters in Chinese language teaching. These arguments are bolstered by statistic evidence for the phonetic effectiveness of these elements and their productivity within the inventory of commonly used characters of modern Chinese. So called ideal phonetics (elements that always point to one and the same pronunciation) and the perspectives of including a certain number of them into classroom teaching are discussed in detail.
