Abstract

The article represents a survey of the current situation of Modern Chinese as an optional subject (“Wahlfach”) at St.-Anna-Gymnasium in Munich. This school offers the student the possibility of attending a two-year basic course (Wahlkurs) and an advanced course (one or two years, Grundkurs). Having finished these courses the students should be able to continue their studies on their own. Subjects and methodics of the students should be able to continue their studies on their own. Subjects and methodics of the courses are explained in the paper. Further, the currently available textbooks are mentioned. Arguments are given why future textbooks should include both at a time, the spoken Chinese and the written Chinese, following thereby a common students desire. At its end the article describes some typical students profiles and their motivations as well as their learning processes.
