Unterschwellige Hilfeleistungen in der Krise. Buddhistische Hygienevorschriften im chinesischen Mittelalter
This article highlights some influences which the translation of vinaya texts in the early fifth century CE may have had on the development of Chinese hygienic practices by analyzing selected passages from the “Section on medicine” of the Dharmaguptaka vinaya [T.1428]. The adaptation process of these practices is furthermore reflected in a discussion on the central term jing 淨 which was used in its original meaning “clean”, its originally Daoist metaphysical meaning “pure” and as the Chinese equivalent of the Indian word kappiya (allowable) in vinaya texts. Finally, the results are discussed in relation to the wider development of Chinese hygienic practices from antiquity to the medieval period.
